Supporting Medical Practitioner and Allied Health Referrals
At Veteran Mentors, we’re committed to empowering young individuals to become the leaders of tomorrow. Our Junior Leadership Program (JLP) is a transformative experience, designed to challenge and grow participants both physically and mentally. This page is created specifically to support Medical Practitioners and Allied Health professionals in making informed referrals, ensuring that the candidates referred are suitable for the program.
The JLP Program is an intensive, adventure-based experience aimed at helping youth develop resilience, leadership skills, and a strong sense of self-discipline. Over the course of the program, participants are exposed to challenging physical activities, team-building exercises, and personal development workshops.
The JLP is designed to push participants out of their comfort zones, encouraging growth through challenges.
Participants learn to take responsibility, develop leadership skills, and build a sense of camaraderie with their peers.
The skills and mindset cultivated during the JLP are designed to last, aiming to set participants on a path to success.
Given the demanding nature of the JLP Program, it’s crucial that participants are both physically and mentally prepared.
Physical Fitness
Participants must be in good physical health, capable of engaging in rigorous outdoor activities including hiking, obstacle courses, fitness drills and team challenges. Participants with physical disabilities are well supported throughout the program, and suitability is assessed through our medical clearance process.
Mental Resilience
The program challenges a participant's mental boundaries through activities and environments to push what they believe is possible. Candidates will be tested in coping with high-pressure situations, their ability to empathise with others, and work effectively in a team environment. Specific psychiatric history should be included in the clearance certificate, and may form part of an assessment for suitability for the program.
Current Medications
The program is structured and resourced to support youths with a medical history or medications regiment that would render them unsuitable on any other program. It is recommended that participants are currently stable on any current medicines or treatments; but due to the high level of medical supervision on program, participants struggling with medications adherence or suitability can be supported, mentored and feedback given to parents.
A Medical Clearance Certificate is required as part of the Veteran Mentors risk mitigation strategy to ensure that each participant is not only fit to participate, but is able to. This can be completed during the referral process, streamlining the enrolment for families.
We understand the importance of medical support during such a vigorous program and each program has an experienced Medic and Pharmacist on site.
B.ParamedPrac, B.PharmManagement(International Pharmacy), Dip.WHS
Hamish is an experienced Medic and Pharmacist, who provides clinical oversight not only throughout the enrolment process, but is onsite during the program. He is available to discuss any medication-related concerns with parents and can be contacted directly by doctors as needed.
This role brings with it a diverse skill set and passion for providing risk management, harm minimisation and healthcare to youths with complex medical and pharmaceutical history.
His experience includes both metro and rural/remote professional practice in community pharmacy, pharmaceutical compounding, military pharmacy and as a casual academic at UNSW – Medicine & Health.
